The Dark Crystal (1982)

The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance has been released on Netflix, a prequel series to Jim Henson’s 1982 film, The Dark Crystal. As a fan, I was excited about the news, because…well, you’re about to find out.

The Directors: Jim Henson and Frank Oz

The Plot:

A long time ago on the planet, Thra, a powerful Crystal cracked. This created two new races: the evil Skeksis, who use the power of the Crystal to escape death, and the kind, and wise Mystics. Jen the Gelfling may be the last of his kind. He was rescued by the Mystics, as the Skeksis slaughtered his clan as a child. Years later, Jen’s Master asks him to go to Aughra, the Keeper of Secrets. She holds the Shard, which will heal the Crystal. Jen must find it and return it before Thra’s three suns align…or else the Skeksis will rule forever.

The Review:

Confused? I don’t blame you. The Dark Crystal is one of those fantasy films which may take more than one attempt to understand what is going on. It’s ambitious, but beautiful in its execution. Like all of Jim Henson’s creations, The Dark Crystal is told through elaborate puppets. Out of all of these, the Skeksis are the most impressive – and terrifying. Great, hulking vulture-like creatures, they are known only by their titles, most notably the Chamberlain. He is crafty, cowardly, and his whimper will set your teeth on edge.

While its style is unique, the inspirations behind The Dark Crystal are clear to see. Jen the Gelfling is modelled on such heroes as Luke Skywalker, or Frodo Baggins due to his diminutive size. As his species suggests Gelflings look like elves, with long, straight hair and pointed ears. Things get especially interesting when Jen meets a female called Kira who, like him, was rescued by the Skeksis by another little race known as the Podlings. What is it that makes female Gelflings so different from the boys? I’m saying nothing here.

As well as its confusing plot, the intended audience for The Dark Crystal is unclear. Many scenes are shocking and have been fondly accused of traumatising people who saw the film as children. Hell, I felt incredibly unsettled watching it for the first time as an adult!

Its prequel, The Age of Resistance fills in the gaps it left behind but, all in all, The Dark Crystal is an exceptional slice of obscure fantasy. It is not necessarily suitable for young kids!

The Verdict: *** 3 STARS OUT OF 5
